Auto Theft Prevention Tips

1.      Lock your car doors and close your windows.

2. Don’t leave valuables in your car. If you do, make sure they are kept out of plain sight — hide them under a blanket, or better yet, lock them in your trunk.

3. When transporting valuables, place them in the trunk before you get to the location where you intend to park. Don’t transfer them at the parking place in open view of other people.

4. If you have a garage, use it.

5. Don’t leave your garage door opener on the dashboard or front seat. Put it in your glove box, hide it or take it with you.

6. Always park in a well-lighted area.

7. Use slide or portable mounts on add-on radios, citizens’ band radios (CBs), tape decks and telephones. When you leave your car, put them in the trunk or take them with you.

8. Mark radios, CBs, tape decks, telephones, batteries, wheel covers and tires with an Operation Identification number. If the stolen item is found later, the number can be traced back to you. To enroll in Operation ID, contact Community Crime Prevention/SAFE at 673-3204.

9. Remember: briefcases, sunglasses, clothing, keys, gyms bags and small change are all tempting to a thief.

10. Leave only the ignition key with the parking attendant in a commercial parking lot.

11. Keep your driver’s license and vehicle registration with you. Left with the car, the documents can be used by a thief to impersonate you when transferring the car’s ownership.

12. Car keys left at home (or at your business) should always be hidden. This will help prevent the theft of your vehicle if you are burglarized.

13. There are locks made for various marketable parts of cars. Battery locks, wheel locks and special tape deck lock mounts can save these items plus any damage that may occur in the process of stealing them.

14. Install a locking gas tank cap to help prevent gasoline theft and limit a thief’s driving range to one tank.

15. Park the front wheel turned sharply to the right or left, making it difficult for the professional thief to tow your car away backwards.

16. With front wheel drive cars: When you park, pull on the emergency brake and place your vehicle in Park. If you have a stick shift, pull on the emergency brake and shift into forward or reverse gear. All four wheels will be locked, making it difficult for a thief to tow your car.

17. Call 911 as soon as theft occurs.

postheadericon Road Work beginning August 16, 2010

Inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances may occur, so the information below is strictly of an advisory nature and is subject to change with no notice.

Pothole patching, sweeping, drain & ditch cleaning, pavement marking, and maintenance crews may work on major interstates in the Louisville Metro area only during non-peak daytime hours and at night.  Motorists should watch for roadside maintenance and pavement marking crews on interstates and highways throughout the rest of the district on a daily basis.

Jefferson County:

Interstate 264: Lane closures and delays possible at the US 42 underpass (mile point 22.1) due to bridge painting.  Lane closures are scheduled in the evenings from 8:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. the following morning and on weekends from 8:00 p.m. on Friday until 6:00 a.m. on Monday.

Interstate 65: Lane closures and delays are possible in both directions between the Bullitt/Jefferson County line and ½ mile north of the Outer Loop (mile points 123.1 and 127.5) due to concrete pavement repairs.  The roadway may be reduced to two lanes weeknights Monday – Friday from 9:00 p.m. in the evening until 5:00 a.m. the following morning.

Westbound Interstate 64: Construction delays possible between Hurstbourne Parkway and I-264 (mile points 15.0 and 12.2) due construction of auxiliary lane.  Motorists should watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the roadway.  The speed limit will be reduced to 45 MPH in the work zone.

Interstate 265: Lane closures and delays possible between the Seatonville Road overpass and Taylorsville Road (mile points 18.8 and 23.3).  The roadway may be reduced to one lane weeknights Monday – Thursday from 7:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. the following morning. On weekends, lane closures are possible from 7:00 p.m. on Friday until 6:00 a.m. on Monday. The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 55 MPH.

Interstate 64: Construction delays possible between I-265 and the Jefferson/Shelby County line (mile points 18.8 and 23.9) due to roadway widening.  Westbound I-64 traffic lanes are split with permanent barrier wall between the two travel lanes.  All traffic exiting westbound I-64 to I-265 must be in the right lane at the beginning of the lane split. Motorists should be aware that the shoulders are limited and narrow at the bridge crossings. Lanes will be restricted to 12 feet in width. The speed limit is reduced to 55 MPH in the construction zone and this is a double fine work zone.  Construction is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2010.  As part of this project, Clark Station Road is closed at the I-64 overpass.  The road is closed until November for removal and replacement of the bridge.  Motorists should follow the signed detour via US 60 to Conner Station Road (in Shelby County) to KY 148.

Interstate 264/Interstate 64 interchange: The following lane and ramp closures on westbound I-264 at the ramp to westbound I-64 approaching the Sherman Minton Bridge (mile point 0.1) are scheduled due to ramp replacement:

  • Left lane of westbound Interstate 64 (mile point 0.8) closed Monday, August 16th from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
  • Right lane of eastbound Interstate 264 (mile point 0.1) closed Tuesday, August 17th from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
  • Left lane of westbound Interstate 264 (mile point 0.1) closed on Tuesday, August 17th from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
  • Exit ramp from westbound Interstate 264 to westbound Interstate 64 (mile point 0.0) closed from 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18th until 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 19th (Motorists should follow signed via eastbound I-64 to 22nd Street to westbound I-64).

US 31W (West Main Street and South 22nd Street): Lane closures and delays possible between US 150 and South 6th Street (mile points 19.5 and 21.7) due to roadway resurfacing.  Lane closures are scheduled weekdays from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Lane closures are also possible on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.

US 31 (Clark Memorial Bridge): Lane closures possible from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. due to bridge repairs.

KY 146: Lane closures and delays possible between Nelson Miller Parkway and Springs Station Road (mile points 6.9 and 7.8) due to construction of turning lanes.  No lane closures are permitted weekdays from 6:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p. m. until 6:00 p.m.

KY 155 (Taylorsville Road): Lane closures and delays possible at the intersection with Landherr Drive (mile point 8.2) due to construction of the Blankenbaker Parkway extension.

KY 913 (Blankenbaker Parkway): Lane closures and delays possible at the intersection with Blankenbaker Access Drive (mile point 0.9) due to roadway construction.

KY 1447 (Westport Road): Lane closures and delays possible between Hubbards Lane and I-264 (mile points 0.9 and 1.9) due to roadway widening.  Speed limit on Westport Road has been reduced to 25 MPH in the construction zone.

KY 1727 (Terry Road): Lane closures and delays possible at intersection with Greenwood Road (mile point 1.5) due to construction of a right turning lane.  Lane closures are scheduled from 6:00 p.m. each evening until 5:00 a.m. the following morning.

17. Call 911 as soon as theft occurs.

postheadericon Back-to-School Tips

The summer is winding down, and soon students will be headed back to school! Chances are, you still have some major “back-to-school shopping” to do. Whether your child is headed to high school or college, the Better Business Bureau has some Back-to-School basics.

When shopping for anything from new attire to electronic items, BBB has these tips to help you be a savvy back-to-school shopper:

1.      Ask about returns and refunds. Shopping for new clothes, accessories and gadgets is one of the highlights of going back to school. When buying new gear, ask the store about their return policy and always keep the receipts. Stores are not legally required to exchange an item or give a refund.

2.      Keep the item in its original box. Many retailers will not accept returns on opened video games, CDs, software or DVDs. And health regulations prohibit returns of hats and other intimate apparel.

3.      Ask about restocking fees. Some merchants charge a restocking or “open box” fee — sometimes as high as 20 percent of the original cost — for returns of electronics products or large-ticket items. Ask if that is the policy so that you know before you buy.

4.      Shop smart online. Find out the physical location and phone number of the merchant. Read the refund and return policy, have in writing any warranty or guaranty details, be familiar with delivery/shipping costs and time schedules, feel comfortable that the merchant is reliable and not the subject of consumer complaints, and be able to trust that any information you submit to complete the sale transaction (credit card number, etc.) will be treated with the proper care.

5.      Carefully check out businesses and deals before signing anything, before paying any money up front, and before releasing any personal or financial information (this includes your Social Security number, mother’s maiden name, credit card, banking account number and other personal data).

If your child is in the market for a computer, BBB recommends doing your research:

  • Decide what your child’s needs will be;
  • What is the computer going to be used for? Word processing, graphic/web design, gaming?
  • Determine what type of hardware and software that will be required;
  • Find out what you have to do if the computer breaks down;
  • Check out the warranty on the computer;
  • Call your school or university and ask what other students in the class use;
  • Compare prices, and check out the companies with the BBB at www.bbb.org;

If you are thinking about allowing your college-bound student to sign up for a credit card, do your homework.

  • Shop around for the plan that best fits your student’s needs. There are often special offers for students;
  • Compare terms and fees before you agree to open a credit card for your student.
  • Find out the interest rate on the card, are they introductoryrates, and if so, how long do they apply?
  • Are there annual fees?
  • Check into the transaction fees and any other charges that could be incurred.
