CRIME WATCH (Vandalism)
Vandalism to Vehicles on the Rise: Police are looking for two heavy set males driving a blue Toyota
Please report suspicious activity by calling 574-LMPD
Block Watch & Street Captains please share this information with neighbors
There is a rash of criminal mischief incidents in the neighborhoods off 3rd Street Road around Cristland Avenue in the Auburndale Neighborhood. There are also reports of vandalism in the Scottsdale Neighborhood. There have been 14 reports of vandalism to autos in less than a week.
The subjects use baseball bats to knock out windows and taillights to vehicles. The only descriptions the police have are two heavy set men driving a blue Toyota. The vehicles that were vandalized were parked on the following streets:
- West Manslick Road
- Burnwick Court
- Afterglow Court
- Caple Avenue
- Elmer Lane
- Angeletta Way
- Scottsdale Blvd
- Runell Road (3 reports)
- Pirouette Avenue
- Franelm Road
- Westhall Avenue (2 reports)
Because the cars that were vandalized were parked on the street, the police encourage motorists to park in driveways or garages.
CRIME WATCH (Door to Door)
Suspicious Door to Door Salesmen On Fruitwood Drive & Leemont Drive
ATTN: Block Watch & Street Captains
Last Friday, two young salesmen approached a resident who lives on Fruitwood Drive. The fast-talking salesmen began asking strange questions such as:
- “Do you have a security system?”
- “Do you have guns in the house?”
- “If someone broke into your home, which window would be the easiest to gain entry?”
- “We’ve been watching you and have noticed that you don’t lock your door when you go back into the house. Do you always lock your door?”
Door-to-Door sales are always popular during the summer months. While some salesmen are reliable, hard workers, there are many scams out there aimed at taking your money. Magazine sales, alarm systems, meat sales, and offers of physical labor on your home are among the most reported fraud claims made. Be sure to ask for the company’s brochure or information, take your time making a decision, and never pay with cash. Also, check out the company with the BBB.
Louisville Metro Police encourages people to call 574-LMPD if they think they are being targeted for a scam. For emergencies, dial 911. You should never divulge personal information about yourself or your property. “They aren’t looking to sell you an alarm, they are taking inventory of your possessions and trying to determine what is the best way to break into your home,” warns Councilman Doug Hawkins.

KY State Fair Tips
Check out the Better Business Bureau at the 2010 KY State Fair! The BBB booth is located in Main Street KY in the South Wing of the KY Fair & Exposition Center.
As hundreds of thousands of people enjoy the fair over the next two weeks, the BBB wants to remind consumers to be cautious when dealing with some indoor exhibitors. New products on display meant to make life easier could be enticing to purchase, but consumers need to ask questions about the product, and the company selling it. BBB suggests asking the following questions:
- How long has the company been in business?
- Does the exhibitor have a telephone number and address where they can be reached should the product be defective?
- Is there a warranty or guarantee covering the product?
- How long is the product covered?
- If the product is defective, can the consumer get their money back or do they have to trade the damaged product for a new one?
Guarantees may give consumers a false sense of security, as a guarantee is often only as good as the company that stands behind the guarantee.
Before consumers buy, they should check the product itself. Consumers need to make certain the materials and construction are up to the actual product’s reputation. Also check the packaging. Does the item inside of the packaging resemble what’s on the outside? The printing on the packaging or the actual construction for counterfeit products is often of poor quality and is a telltale sign the product contained is counterfeit. And remember, if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Offers to win a free trip may also be on display at the fair, along with credit card companies trying to lure customers to sign up for free gifts and prizes. While the prize may be free, by giving the promoter your name, phone number and address, consumers could receive unwanted credit cards in the mail as well as unwanted phone calls from telemarketers to their home. Consumers need to be aware when they sign up to win a prize, and giving the promoter a phone number and address, they’re establishing a business relationship with the company promoting the prize. The business may then contact you regardless of no call list registration due to that relationship.
If you’d like more tips for consumers at the Kentucky State Fair, call Reanna Smith-Hamblin at the Better Business Bureau at 502-588-0043.
