Utility Rate Increases
Councilman Hawkins
has never voted for a rate increase!
Councilman Hawkins has never voted for an MSD rate increase or any fee increase since serving on Louisville’s Metro Council.
The Courier Journal reports that in the past ten years utility rates have increased more than people’s wages. “When MSD, LG&E, and Louisville Water Company raise their rates it has a devastating effect on all residents, especially those living on fixed income,” says Councilman Doug Hawkins. “More people are having difficulty paying their utility bills because most salaries are not keeping up with the cost of inflation.”
The two highest rate increases came from MSD and the Louisville Water Company, whose board members are directly appointed by the mayor. Over ten years, the Louisville Water Company rates have increased 68% and MSD rates have increased 128%.
District 25 residents needing utility assistance may call the Southwest Community Ministries at 935-0310 or Metro United Way by dialing 211. MSD does offer a 30% discount to qualifying senior citizens. Seniors must be 65 years of age or older with household gross income of $35,000 or less per year and must be on MSD sewers.
